Forestry in the Watershed Talk Series: Thomas Gilbert ‘Best Management Practices and the Maine State Forestry Program’

As a Water Resources Specialist with the Maine Forest Service, Tom manages water quality programs, including an annual forestry BMP monitoring program and produces a biennial BMP monitoring report. Tom is also involved in state-wide stream connectivity efforts and stream habitat enhancement using large wood additions. He also serves as a board member of Project SHARE, is a member on the technical committee of the Maine Audubon Stream Smart program, and a member of the steering committee for the Fisheries Improvement Network at the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Tom will discuss a brief history of forestry BMPs as well as the efforts of the Maine Forest Service in monitoring BMP use and effectiveness around the state. He will also discuss the results of the most recent biennial report on forestry BMP use and effectiveness in Maine.
