Why are boats allowed on Lake Auburn, but not people?

Petroleum products from boats are less dense than water and therefore likely to float; we can remove spills if needed. Our intake pipes are at the lake bottom; out of the path of spilled boat pollutants. Unfortunately, people can carry pathogens that could make our customers sick. There simply is no technology existing to identify all potential threats introduced by bodily contact. To keep the drinking water safe, we must reduce the risk, which means you'll need to find another swimming hole. Luckily, Maine has more than 6000 lakes; and most are clean, clear, and cool!
